PE and Sports

At The Bewbush Academy we understand the importance of PE and Sport on the health and well-being of all children.

Since 2013, the government have provided schools with additional funding for PE and Sport, giving schools the autonomy to spend the money in the most appropriate ways to ensure the greatest impact.  With this funding we hope to provide a sustainable PE provision that has a long lasting effect.

What is the PE and Sport Funding?

In March 2013 the Government announced that it would provide additional funding to primary schools to support the improvement of provision of PE and sport. The funding, allocated to head teachers in primary schools is ring-fenced and can only be spent on PE and sport in primary schools. The headteacher and governors are accountable for the spending of the funding.

The premium must be used to fund additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport. It is to benefit primary-aged pupils and to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles.

Schools should use the Primary PE and Sport Premium to achieve the following:
  • Develop or add to the PE, physical activity and sport activities that your school already offers
  • Build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years.
Schools can use the premium to secure improvements in the following indicators:
  • The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school
  • The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
  • Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
  • Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
  • Increased participation in competitive sport
How we invest our Sports Funding

This year our sports funding has allowed us to continue to raise the profile of PE and Sport around the school. One of our key areas for investment has been to further increase the range of after school clubs on offer to our pupils. We have done this by supplementing the costs of outside providers (making sessions more affordable for parents and carers). We have also vastly improved our own resources: allowing school staff to run a variety of free sports clubs.

We have worked with local sports clubs (such as Crawley Town Football Club and Crawley Storm Basketball Club) who have been running after school and curriculum activities for the children. This has not only developed the skills of our pupils but also our teachers, who work alongside the specialist coaches. Many of our pupils have been so inspired that they now also attend weekend sessions with these clubs.

We aim to continue raising the profile of sport and PE around the school as well as the continual development of staff.
